MANGALURU: The First World Konkani Music Mega Convention, organised by the renowned Konkani cultural organisation Mandd Sobhann, was inaugurated by Goa Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant at Town Hall, Mangaluru, on Tuesday, November 3.

The mega convention, organised as part of Mandd Sobhann’s Ruby Jubilee (40th anniversary) celebrations, brings together Konkani singers, musicians and cultural enthusiasts from across India and abroad to celebrate and promote the rich heritage of the Konkani language and music.

""

The major attraction of the convention is an ambitious Guinness World Records title attempt titled ‘Konko’nni Niro’nto’ri – So’msar So’raso’ri’ (Eternal Konkani – Unto the World’s End). The singing marathon aims to create a record for the longest singing marathon by multiple singers, with continuous performances planned for 12 days, 12 hours and 12 minutes, from November 3 to November 15.

More than 6,789 singers, representing around 300 teams, are expected to participate in the musical marathon, presenting over 4,500 Konkani songs composed by more than 250 composers. Participants from different parts of India and countries including Australia, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar are taking part in this international initiative. The organisers have planned the performances without repetition of singers or songs.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Pramod Sawant appreciated the efforts of Mandd Sobhann and the organising committee for bringing Konkani-speaking communities together on a common platform. He highlighted the cultural bond between Goa and coastal Karnataka and observed that although dialects may differ, Konkani-speaking people remain united through their language and cultural identity.

He also acknowledged the dedication of the Konkani community in Mangaluru in preserving and promoting the language through cultural initiatives.

The inaugural ceremony was blessed by Bishop of Mangaluru Diocese Most Rev. Dr. Peter Paul Saldanha. Several dignitaries, including public representatives and prominent personalities from Goa and Karnataka, attended the programme.

The convention features musical performances, cultural exhibitions, academic seminars, felicitation of eminent artistes, a Hall of Fame showcasing Konkani music personalities and traditional Konkani cuisine. A special children’s programme titled ‘Ful Futola’ is also among the attractions.

The entire convention is dedicated to the memory of late Eric Ozario, the visionary Gurkar of Mandd Sobhann, whose contribution to the promotion of Konkani language, music and culture remains significant.

Through this 13-day celebration, Mandd Sobhann aims to unite Konkani-speaking people across geographical boundaries and bring Konkani music and its diverse traditions to the international stage. The convention will conclude on November 15.
